Tree Pruning
Not all trees are the same when it comes to pruning. It’s important to consider the specific type and condition of each tree. We emphasize the overall health of the tree for its pruning needs. For example, it’s usually better to prune with smaller cuts over a 5-year cycle, rather than make large cuts only every 10 years, which can compromise the tree’s health.
Tree Removal
Generally, if there is no problem with a tree, we encourage trying to find ways to keep it thriving. Our aim is to preserve the “urban forest” rather than to eliminate trees. However, sometimes it is clear that a diseased or dying tree will need to be removed. We have all the equipment necessary to perform removal of any size tree.
Our removal process generally involves:
- Ensuring sufficient access so we can tread lightly to minimize impact.
- Expediting the removal process, especially for urgent situations.
- Finding creative ways to be efficient with equipment and labor.
- Suggesting the best possible use of tree remains, such as wood chips as mulch, limbs as firewood, and large logs for artisan or craft woodworkers.
Tree Planting
It is important to select the right tree for the space. We can help you with planning the space and selecting the type of tree.
Some considerations before planting: We can plant trees any time of the year except winter. The best times to plant trees are either spring or fall. Biodiversity is better than having all trees of the same type. We can suggest various types that complement each other.
Our planting process involves:
- We contact the utility services to locate and mark all utility lines.
- Once you have chosen the type of tree(s) you want, we get it from our supplier and transport the tree to your site, to ensure safe transport. For larger sizes or quantities, we can coordinate transport by the supplier nursery.
- We bring all needed equipment to dig, plant and mulch the tree. Planting time depends on the specific location and whether it’s done with machines or by hand.
Stump Grinding
When we grind stumps, our aim is to leave your site with level ground, as if the stump had never existed. There will be no remaining mound and no dip in your yard.
Our stump grinding process involves:
- Using the appropriate equipment to grind. The resulting wood chips can be reused as mulch by you, or we will haul them away.
- Our standard approach is to grind 6-inches below level grade (ground surface).
- We backfill the area with top soil and grass seed; or discuss replacing the stump area with a new tree if desired.
Wood Chips (often free)
Wood chips are great for landscaping uses and are available from us upon request. Our wood chips are only from wood that is free of disease and non-invasive species.
We prefer to deliver wood chips by the full truck-load of 12 cubic yards. Some requests might incur a cost for transport, depending on distance and amount.
On-Site Consultation / Tree Health Assesment
If you need help with planning or assessing the condition of your tree(s) we offer dedicated on-site consultation* with a certified arborist.
Types of consultations often include:
- Risk assessment of a tree(s) for structural integrity.
- Assessment of a tree’s overall health, such as when species-specific diseases are in the area.
- Provide information about the trees on your property and how to best care for them. This can be important for new owners.
* Note: This consultation service is a stand-alone appointment. If pruning or other work is agreed, that will occur on a different day after providing you with a quote.
